AmazonBasics High-Speed HDMI cable is a good quality product providing reliable connection and transmitting High Definition Video and muti-channel audio to HD TV or other device equipped by HDMI port
Nowadays High Definition TVs and HD devices are developing very fast. There are a lot of them available on the market in various forms starting from home theater and ending up with tablets. All of them support HD video and the vast majority of them equipped by HDMI or DVI port in order to transmit video signals over HDMI cable or DVI cable. So what is HDMI and how it differs from DVI?
What is HDMI ?
HDMI is an abbreviation for High-Definition Multimedia Interface. HDMI was designed for secure transfer of High Definition digital video and multi-channel digital audio using High Bandwidth Digital Copy Protection (HDCP). HDMI is a modern replacement for analog connectivity standards such as SCART or RCA.
One of the significant advantages of HDMI interface is the support of eight-channel sound. Most devices equipped by previous generation DVI interface could work with 2-channel sound only. Multi-channel HDMI sound is not supported by old TV models. That is why DVI was designed to support 2-channel, i.e. stereo sound. HDMI has been designed for supporting superior quality eight-channel sound right from the beginning.
HDMI vs DVI
HDMI interface is a new generation of digital video interfaces and is at some extent compatible with the older DVI interface. HDMI connector could provide DVI (digital visual interface)-connection to multiple devices with the appropriate cable. The main difference between HDMI and DVI is that the HDMI connector is smaller and supports multi-channel digital audio as well as HDCP.
DVI to HDMI cable
HDMI and DVI Interfaces use different types of connectors but have identical coding. Therefore the connections between 2 interfaces could be done easily by using simple connector. The video and audio signals need not to be converted. For instance, a camcorder with an output DVI port could be connected to an HDMI port on display by simple DVI to HDMI adapter or DVI to HDMI cable.
Connecting a laptop or a tablet to HD TV by HDMI or DVI cable
Connecting a laptop or a tablet to HD TV is a straight forward task when all devices are equipped by HDMI interfaces. You just need HDMI cable. Keep in mind that the cable should not be longer than 65 feet otherwise significant loss of quality of video could occur. There is a chance that your tablet is equipped by mini or even micro version of HDMI interface. In such case you will need mini HDMI to HDMI cable or microHDMI to HDMI cable. As it was mentioned earlier DVI output is not a problem either. DVI to HDMI adapter or cable should help in such cases.
