This October Samsung is going to introduce a tablet running on new Window 8 operating system. New tablets will be powered by ARM architecture based Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The size of the touch screen is not specified, but most likely it will be from 8 to 10 inches. Samsung ARM tablet will run on Windows RT – special version of Windows 8 for ARM based devices.
There are a number of other companies such as HP, Dell, Lenovo, Toshiba and ASUS presenting their Windows 8 based tablets in the fourth quarter of 2012. The price on Windows 8 tablets are expected in range from $600 to $1000.
According to IDC, there were around 17.4 million tablets of various platforms shipped in the first quarter of 2012. This is a 120% increase over the same period of 2011.
Asus announced Transformer Book tablets running on Windows 8. Transformer Book is a tablet that could easily converted to a laptop by attaching a special keyboard. There are 11.6, 13 and 14-inch models of Asus Transformer Book tablets. All of them should have IPS displays with resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels and powered by next generation Intel Ivy Bridge Core i7 processors. In addition to the hard drive Transformer Book tablets will be equipped by SSD- drive, USB 3.0 ports and four gigabytes of DDR3 RAM. There are two built-in cameras expected. The front camera is designed for video calls. The rear camera will have better resolution of five megapixels.
In addition to Transformers Book tablets Asus introduced the Taichi laptops featured by two displays. Displays are located on both sides of the lid. The one on the front is a touch screen. Both displays could be used simultaneously and show different pictures at the time. As in the case of the Transformer Book consumers will receive a “two-in-one” device: a laptop and a tablet. Backlit keyboard and stylus adding even more charm to the device.There are two models of Taichi coming with displays of 11.6, and 13.3 inches and a resolution of 1900 by 1280 pixels. The laptop also powered by next generation Intel Ivy Bridge Core i7 processor, has four gigabytes of RAM, USB 3.0 micro-DVI ports.
Asus don’t disclose the price of devices as well as th release date. Obviously Transformer Book tablets and Taichi laptops will appear in stores after the release of Windows 8 expecting in autumn 2012. Asus produced transformers in 2011 but all previous models were powered by ARM processors and Android operating system.
Hewlett-Packard Company is going to resume production of tablets oriented on home users. HP discontinued the production of TouchPad tablet in 2011.TouchPad tablet went to stores on July 1, 2011. Six weeks later HP discontinued the production of the device due to low sales. The remaining tablets were sold for 99 U.S. dollars accounting for one fifth of its original price.Since then the company produces only Slate tablet for corporate clients.
In contrast to the TouchPad, the new HP tablet will not use the webOS. TouchPad was using the operating system webOS, owned by HP after acquisition of Palm in 2010 for 1.2 billion dollars. In late 2011 HP has promised to open the source code of webOS and allowed other companies to use the system without paying royalties. The new tablet will run on Windows 8 operating system.
Technical details of the device are not disclosed. However there is some information available from other internet resources. According to them the new HP tablet will be powered by x86 processor, run on Windows 8 operating system and have 10.1.-inch display. Device should be capable running on battery up to 10 hours.
According to vice-president of HP Todd Bradley the tablets will use a kind of cloud service for storing files and for synchronization of different devices.
The new HP tablet sales will launch after the release of Microfoft Windows 8. Microsoft does not disclose the exact date of the release but expectations are that Windows 8 will be available in the third quarter of 2012.
Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga Notebook
Lenovo is trying to catch consumer’s attention by the well known and popular transformers idea with the brand new laptop IdeaPad Yoga. IdeaPad Yoga could be easily “transformed” to the tablet by rotating the screen up to 360 degrees. Such design comes with touch screen display and Metro interface of Windows 8 operating system installed on 256GB SSD. The notebook powered by new generation of Intel’s Ivy Bridge CPU and up to 8GB of RAM. IdeaPad Yoga has 13.1-inch screen with pretty good resolution of 1600×900 pixels capable of detecting a touch of up to 10 fingers at once.
