Acer Iconia B1 is a new extremely cheap tablet running on Google Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. According to the Wall Street Journal the price of the tablet is expected around $99.
The heart of Acer Iconia B1 tablet is MediaTek hardware platform powered by dual-core 1.2 GHz processor and the GPU PowerVR SGX 531. Acer Iconia B1 comes with 7-inch display with resolution of 1024×600 pixels and 512 MB of operating memory. There are also built-in GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and cellular modules, 8 GB of internal memory and microSD memory expansion slot.
Low cost and advanced functionality may attract consumers and Acer Iconia B1 could become one of the most popular on Android tablets market. The new Acer tablet may well compete with popular gadgets such as Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire.
According to The Wall Street Journal Acer Iconia B1 should be available early next year.
Recently released iPad mini tablet by Apple came with 1024×768 pixels display. Such resolution corresponds to the density of 163 pixels per imch. According to DigiTimes Apple is planning to release updated iPad mini tablet equipped with high resolution Retina display. the device will receive the second generation improved display with a higher resolution. Provided information is based on sources of suppliers of the tablets cited by DigiTimes.
Although sources do not specifically mention Retina display the most analysts expect that the updated iPad mini should come with 2058×1536 pixels Retina display providing pixels density of 326 ppi.
9.7-inch display of iPad 3 is also going to change. In particular two LED-backlight modules are going to be replaced by one. Such change will decrease the weight of iPad and therefore make the tablet more comfortable for end users.
Microsoft announced today the start of the distribution of Windows RT based Surface tablets through third-party retailers. Sales will start in the middle of December. The company was unhappy with sales of the device and therefore decided to take this step.
U.S. and Australian retailers will begin selling the tablet in the next few days. The number of retailers will be increased in the coming months. Currently, the tablet is available in Microsoft official stores in U.S. and Canada. Surface tablet is also available in online stores in Australia, Canada, China, Germany, France and Great Britain. In the next few days Surface RT will become available in Staples, Best Buy and Walmart.
“Our goal is to expand retail distribution channels Surface within the next year. Depending on the interest of some stores, we offer them the possibility to deliver the device even before the other,”- said Steve Schuler, vice president of Microsoft’s sales and marketing.
Retail outlets will sell have three models of Surface: a model with 32 GB of memory without Touch Cover, as well as two models with Touch Cover and memory capacity 32 GB and 64 GB. The price of the cheapest model will start at $499. This price does not include a protective Keyboard Touch Cover. It will have to be purchased separately for $ 119.
8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD tablets become available according to a press release on the Amazon official website. The price tag of 16-gigabyte version of the tablet is $299 while 32-gigabyte version cost $369. Sales of 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD with LTE support will start a week later and will be more expensive. A version with 32 gigabytes of internal memory may cost $499, and a 64 GB – $599.
8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD powered by dual-core OMAP 4479 1.5 GHz processor and has a 1GB of RAM. The tablet comes with high resolution 1920×1200 pixels display with 254ppi density. 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD could run on battery power about 10 hours. The tablet weighs 567 grams and equipped by a micro-USB connector and micro-HDMI. The Wi-Fi of the device is accelerated by using double antenna and MIMO technology.
Kindle Fire HD is running on modified Android 4.0 operating system. Amazon has developed its own tablet shell and Silk browser. Applications could be downloaded from the Amazon Appstore.
Amazon announced Kindle Fire HD tablets in early September 2012. 7-inch tablet was available in mid-September. The shipping of 8.9-inch devices was expected on November 20, but Amazon began shipping the device ahead of schedule.
A few days ago Barnes & Noble announced 7-inch Nook HD and 9-inch Nook HD + tablets running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system.

The manufacturer claims Nook HD as the world’s lightest 7-inch tablet with a high-resolution display. The weight of the gadget is 315 g only. 7-inch Nook HD powered by dual core 1.3GHz processor and has 1GB of RAM. Flash storage capacity could be 8 or 16GB depending on the model. In addition Nook HD equipped with MicroSD slot for storage extension.
7-inch Nook HD comes with high resolution 1440×900 pixels display 1440 × 900 pixels with density of 243 pixels per inch. The equipment includes wireless adapter Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n), MicroUSB and HDMI ports. The tablet could run up to 10.5 hours while reading and up to 9 hours while watching video on a single battery charge.
According to the Barnes & Noble, Nook HD + model is the lightest and most affordable tablet equipped with a 9-inch high-definition touch screen display. The device weighs 515 g. Nook HD + display supports full HD and has a resolution of 1920×1280 pixels, i.e. 256 pixels per inch.
Nook HD+ powered by dual-core 1.5 GHz OMAP 4470 processor and has 1 GB of RAM. Flash storage capacity of the device could be 16 or 32 GB depending on the model.
Other features of Nook HD + are: Wi-Fi adapter, MicroSD slot, MicroUSB and HDMI ports. The battery supports up to 10 hours of reading and 9 hours of video playback on single charge.
Tablets are integrated with online services Barnes & Noble: users can download books, magazines, movies, various applications, training materials and other digital content.
Sales of Nook HD tablets may begin in late October. 8 GB Nook HD model will cost $199 and 16 GB Nook HD- $229. Prices of Nook HD + with a flash storage of 16 GB and 32 are $269 and $299 respectively.
