Recently Samsung started selling a new version of 7-inch tablet Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 – Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Student Edition. In fact it is the same Android-tablet but includes Keyboard Dock and USB Adapter for the same price.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Student Edition is available in a white color, has a 7-inch display with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels and a dual-core 1 GHz TI OMAP4 processor, Keyboard Dock and USB adapter. Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Student Edition sells for $249.99. Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 Student Edition runs on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The tablet comes with front and rear built-in cameras and 8GB of internal storage. It could be extended with flash storage up to 32GB via MicroSDHC card slot. Google Nexus 7 tablet has only one front camera and does not have options to expand storage.
On other hand Google Nexus 7 comes with more powerful quad core processor, high resolution 1280×800 pixels display and runs on the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Google Nexus 7 supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC versus to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0 and IR port of Samsung Galaxy Tab 2.
From our point of view both tablets are good for their niches. Google Nexus 7 provides very good performance but missing some important features such as rear camera and storage expansion slot.

Amazon Kindle Fire 2 in response to Google Nexus 7
Amazon is developing next generation Kindle Fire 2 tablet in response to recent introduction of Google Nexus 7 tablet.
A few weeks ago Google introduced its first tablet – Google Nexus 7. Google Nexus 7 tablet features modern powerful components and latest Android operating system. In addition the tablet has an attractive price tag of $200. Google Nexus 7 tablet become one of the main competitors of popular low-cost Android-devices Amazon Kindle Fire and Barnes & Noble Nook.
Amazon Kindle Fire was introduced at the end of 2011 and quickly become popular due to the attractive design, convenient user interface and giant collection of digital content by Amazon. Since then Amazon is developing next generation of Kindle Fire tablets.
Some analysts believe that Amazon developing three new 7-inch Kindle Fire models and one model with 8.9-inch display. Such information based on the analysis of supply chain of components required for assembling the next generation of Amazon Kindle Fire.
Based on the analysis the following models are expected:
- 7-inch Kindle Fire 2 with the screen resolution of 1024×600 pixels and no camera. Release and manufacturing of this model expected in August;
- 7-inch Kindle Fire 2 with the screen resolution of 1280×800 pixels and built-in camera. Release and manufacturing of this model expected in August;
- 7-inch Kindle Fire 2 with the screen resolution of 1280×800 pixels, built-in camera and 4G support. Release and manufacturing of this model expected in August;
- 8.9-inch Kindle Fire 2 with the screen resolution of 1920×1200 pixels. Release and manufacturing of this model expected at the end of 2012.
According to above mentioned expectations Amazon Kindle Fire will remain the main competitor of Google Nexus 7 on 7-inch tablet market. Another powerful player Apple iPad mini may come later in October 2012.
If provided technical details are accurate then some models of Amazon Kindle Fire 2 may attract customers with 4G support and better resolution of 8.9-inch display. Amazon Kindle Fire 2 7-inch models display density expected to be 216 PPI – the same as Google Nexus 7 tablet has. Such resolution is quite competitive with the latest Apple iPad 3 264 PPI. The current generation of Amazon Kindle Fire has a value 170 PPI.
Currently there is no information about what processors will be used in next generation of Amazon Kindle Fire. The most analysts say that it could be either Texas Instruments OMAP or 4-core NVIDIA Tegra 3.

Apple iPad 3 mini – competitors’ nightmare
There are more and more information about Apple iPad 3 mini tablet coming from anonymous sources. Apple iPad 3 mini tablet with 7 to 8 inches display expected to be released at the end of the 2012.

Google Nexus 7 tablet
A new budget tablet by Google is coming and expected to be presented soon at the Google I/O. The name of the tablet is Nexus 7. It comes with 7-inch IPS matrix display with a resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels. Google Nexus 7 Tablet is powered by a quad-processor 1.3 GHz processor, has a gigabyte of RAM, built-in 1.2 megapixels camera and could run on battery for up to 9 hours. It will run on Android Jelly Bean operating system and have pre-installed Google Wallet software.
Google Nexus 7 will be manufactured by ASUS and available in two versions with eight and sixteen gigabytes of internal memory and the price of $199 and $249 respectively.
Google Nexus 7 will be a direct competitor to Amazon Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet.
Apple iPad 3 updated model ?
There are some rumors in regards of Apple intention to release updated Apple iPad 3 tablet model with 9.7-inch touch screen display. The current generation of Apple iPad 3 tablet has been released a few months ago. Apple iPad3 tablet came with famous high resolution 2048 × 1536 pixels Retina display, powered by 2-core Apple A5X processor and 4-core graphic controller. There were also rear 5 megapixels camera, Wi-Fi (802.11a/b/g/n) and Bluetooth 4.0 adapters, GPS receiver and a number of sensors.
The updated model of Apple iPad 3 tablet expected to come with a new type of touch screen display based on indium gallium zinc oxide IGZO panel technology Such displays have a high resolution and a low power consumption. In addition, they have a large viewing angle and good colors. IGZO panel technology should help with even thinner tablet design and longer battery time. The updated Apple iPad 3 expected to be introduced at the end of summer 2012.
According to some forecasts sales of tablets could reach 119 million units in 2012 while Apple iPad 3 share of total sales may reach 72%.
Amazon Kindle Fire 2 – Next Generation Amazon Tablet
Amazon introduced Kindle Fire tablet in September last year. Since then the tablet become very popular and it is currently number one Android tablet on the market. Amazon plans to introduce second generation of Kindle Fire, this time on the special event at the end of July 2012.
There are some changes coming with Amazon Kindle Fire 2. In particular the resolution of 7-inch display will be increased to 1280×800 pixels. Most likely Kindle Fire 2 will be introduced at a special event on July 31 this year. The most of technical details of Amazon Kindle Fire 2 are not disclosed. However Amazon Kindle Fire 2 could come with the built-in camera and additional buttons for voice control. The price on the new model is not expected to change and will remain $199. The price for the current model of AmazonKindle Fire will drop to $149.
The main competitors of Amazon Kindle Fire 2 on 7-inch Android tablet market are well known Barnes & Noble models as well as recently introduced Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and Google Nexus 7 tablets manufactured by ASUS.
There are also rumors about the announcement of new generation of electronic book readers along with Amazon Kindle Fire 2. Updated version of the Kindle Touch expected to come with built-in backlight display following to the recently released Barnes & Noble book reader with similar functionality.
Google Nexus 7-inch tablet by ASUS coming in June?
There were some rumors in regards of Google plans to release a 7-inch tablet under Nexus brand. Recently some details came out. According to the ASUS representative the company plans to release for Google 7-inch tablets powered by NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor.
The cost of the gadget expected to be in the range of $ 150-250. Most likely Google announce Nexus 7-inch tablet manufactured by ASUS at the end of June on Google I/O conference. Usually Google announce new products of the company on such events.

It is the cheapest tablet of such class available in the market. Samsung offers Galaxy Tab 2 with built-in cameras and memory expansion slot for 249$. There are no either cameras or memory extension slot available on Amazon tablet. Amazon Kindle Fire main functionality is concentrated on easy and reliable access to books, music, video and other digital content of Amazon stores.
The brand Kindle associates with Amazon and books and therefore triggers expectations of superior quality and easy to use functionality for reading books. Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 does not provide comparable functionality and quality of reading books. Amazon Kindle Fire screen is much better calibrated and provide reach reading experience through multiple color tones, font sizes and types as well as built-in thesaurus capabilities. Kindle Fire has access to a large collection of Amazon digital content including downloadable and streaming television programs and movies. Premium account holders have access to thousands of movies and TVs. Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 does not have any built-in media player and Android platform currently does not offer one either. However Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 consumers could install flash player and watch videos through the web browser. Samsung does not provide any digital content for Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 customers at the moment. Amazon Cloud Player app for Android is free and provides the access and opportunity to buy the music from Amazon cloud. Per our opinion Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 has some advantages and disadvantages comparing to Amazon Kindle Fire. Amazon Kindle Fire is focused on delivery of Amazon’s digital content and has significant advantages in this area. Amazon tablet is much more convenient for reading books, watching movies and listening music On other hand Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 is running on latest Android platform and comes with two cameras, GPS, expandable memory and Bluetooth. Such features are not available in Amazon Kindle Fire.
