The concept of NUC mini computers was introduced by Intel in 2012. At the beginning the concept was criticized because of the extremely limited expansion features. For instance there was no space for hdd/ssd  drive in the body of microcomputer.  In response to such criticism Intel introduced the new generation of NUC with advanced functionality that includes support for both ssd and conventional hard drive.

Intel NUC features

The main feature of new generation of compact desktop platform powered by Intel 4th generation Haswell processors is the support of solid state drives or hard drives of 2.5 inches form factor.

The main component of NUC is the motherboard of size 100 × 100 mm.  The new generation comes fourth generation Haswell  Intel Core processor. There is a choice of between 1.7 GHz dual Core i3-4010U with Intel HD Graphics 4400 and 2.6 GHz Core i5-4250U with Intel HD Graphics 5000.

The system board has two slots for DR3L SO-DIMM memory modules for a total of up to 16 GB. There are also connectors for the mSATA SSD and Mini PCI slot for expansion cards,  four USB 3.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet and HDMI 1.4a interfaces.

The main difference between new mini- desktop and previous model is the appearance of a standard slot for storage of 2.5-inch form factor. Such feature enable customers to add high capacity HDD devices of 7.5 or 9.5 mm into the body of the mini-computer.

Supports 2.5 -inch drives opens up some additional opportunities. For example, usage of conventional hard drive in conjunction with the mSATA- SSD module could take an advantage of  Intel Smart Response technology. The technology combines high-performance of flash memory with the large capacity of hard drive speeding up access to frequently used files and applications.

In addition the hybrid storage subsystem supports Intel Rapid Start technology that quickly  wake up the computer.

However adding support for internal storage has its own downside in terms of the size of the device. The height of the device increased from 34.5 to 49.5 mm. Other dimensions remained unchanged  116,6 × 112,0 mm.

Intel NUC price and availability

New generation Intel NUC mini computers are currently available. The price tag on NUC varies between and depending on desired configuration.
