Intel announced the family of fourteen Ivy Bridge dual core processors today. Six of them are designed for desktop computers. The remaining eight engineered for compact notebooks and ultrabooks Some of them labeled by “U” have low power consumption and therefore could run longer time on the battery. Ivy Bridge Core i5 and Core i7 are currently available and Core i3 will follow later.
Ivy Bridge processors have the same micro-architecture as previous generation of chips Sandy Bridge but provide better performance and lower power consumption.
First Ivy Bridge chips came out in late April. They had four cores and were designed for desktop computers and powerful laptops.
Intel is widely known as a company that introduced the concept of ultrabook, The concept was recently updated. The Company believes that current ultrabooks must have high-speed USB 3.0 ports or Thunderbolt and built-in security. Ultrabook should run on battery power for at least 8 hours and download updates while in “sleeping” mode.
Intel claims that around 110 models of ultrabook will be powered by Ivy Bridge. 30 of them will have touch screens and 10 should be transformers like ASUS Eee Pad Transformer and Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga.
Sony introduces the new manual charger CycleEnergy USB CP-A2LAKS. Manual in true sense because one needs constantly rotate the generator handle in order to charge mobile devices on the go. The gadget consists of the battery capacity of 4000 mA /h and detachable unit with a manual generator. Three minutes of rotating the handle of generator produce enough energy for 1 minute cell phone talk. Five minutes of rotating of the handle generates is good enough for one minute of Internet browsing. The charger connects to the portable device via two-port USB adapter. It is assumed that the manual recharging needed in emergency situations when there is no access to the power source. The charger has built-in battery with the capacity of two recharges of a smarphone. Expected price of the product is $100.
Leap Motion Leap 3D: accurate motion control device.
California based startup company Leap Motion currently accepting pre-orders for the motion control device Leap 3D. According to the specification device is capable of catching virtually any movement with the high positioning accuracy. Leap 3D providing to customers the better way of interacting with computers similar to the one offered by Microsoft Kinect Xbox controller.
Up to a hundredth of a millimeter positioning accuracy provided by Leap 3D is 200 times better than Microsoft Kinect. In addition device is at least 2 times cheaper and cost around $70. Microsoft Kinect for the Xbox cost is around $150 and for PC is around $250. Leap Motion expects start of shipping of Leap 3D in December 2012 or January 2013.
Leap Motion spent more than 4 years on developing a new technology.The company is planning on hiring more staff and engaging more companies in development of related applications by providing development packages for free. Device expected to run on Windows 7, 8 and Mac OS X.
Leap 3D is a compact USB-receiver with sensors and cameras. The device virtually creates three-dimensional space controlled by sensors and monitor the position of any small objects in that space in real time. The high accuracy has been achieved by introducing of complex mathematical models and algorithms rather than relying on hardware capabilities. The gadget looks like an ordinary portable hard drive. Leap 3D could be used for exploring web sites, playing games, drawing and sizing of maps and similar activities.
Nova days the most popular and powerful mobile devices such as tablets and smartphones run on either Android or Apple iOS platform. There were total of 152.3 million smartphones shipped during the first quarter of the current year. According to the recent research the combined market share of leading mobile OSes Google Android and Apple iOS reached 82 percent in the first quarter of 2012.
The leading position holds Android with 59 percent of the market. The number of shipped Android devises is very impressive and totals to 89.9 million in first quarter of 2012. This is around 145% higher than for the first quarter of the last year. Google Android become very popular due to growing number of applications developed for the platform and release of a number of various Android based devices.
Apple iOS holds the second position with 23 percent of the market. 35.1 million of iPhones have been shipped in the first quarter of 2012. This is not bad at all taking into account that Apple has only one smartphone model and sales increase by 88.7 percent comparing to the first quarter of the last year.
Symbian and BlackBerry OS were the main losers. Their shares of the market dropped by 60.6 and 29.7 percent respectively. However Symbian OS still holds 3rd place with the share of 6.8 percent. BlackBerry OS still holds 6.4 percent of the mobile OS market.
Nvidia developed the concept of $199 quad core CPU powered Android tablet named Kai. The concept based on enhancement of existing version of Nvidia quad-core Tegra processor. The company is going to use cheaper components for Tegra CPU as well as use low power consumption displays.Nvidia does not disclose the release date of the tablet. Kai tablet will run on Android 4.x platform.
The head of Nvidia Jen-Hsun Huang was expecting the price of aroung $300 of Tegra 3 based tablets in the spring of 2012. However at present time tablets powered by Tegra 3 are still costly – around $ 400.
The closest competitor of Kai is one of the best Android tablets powered by NVIDIA Tegra 3 the Eee Pad Transformer.
